Academic Standing Requirements

To be in good standing and to register (unconditionally), a student must have passed more than 50% of their courses for the year (excluding Summer School). A student admitted in January must pass more than 50% of their courses in that semester.

A student must also meet the standards of their particular program as outlined in the advancement policy of the program to which they belong. If the program policy is more stringent than the college policy, the program policy takes precedence. Some program advancement policies are outlined below.

For the purposes of this policy, courses with the following remarks do not count as courses passed or failed: EQ, SU, DI, or “authorized absence” (IN).

Advancement Requirements of Programs and Profiles:

Arts, Literature and Communication Program

A student must have passed more than 50% of the concentration courses required for the year, as well as more than 50% of the general education/complementary courses required for the year.

A student admitted in January must have passed more than 50% of the required concentration courses, as well as at least one general education/complementary course in their first term.

Social Science Program

A student must have passed at least three Social Science Concentration courses (any combination of introductory concentration courses/Research Methods) and two general education courses in their first two terms.

A student must have passed at least five Social Science concentration courses (any combination of introductory concentration courses/Research Methods/Quantitative Methods) and four general education/complementary courses in their first three terms.

A student must have passed at least seven Social Science concentration courses (including five introductory Social Science concentration courses and Research Methods) and at least seven general education/complementary courses, in their first four terms.

A student admitted in January must have passed at least two introductory Social Science concentration courses in their first term.

Commerce Profile

As well as meeting the Social Science program requirements mentioned-above, Commerce profile students must also have passed Calculus I in their first year to remain in the profile.

Science Program

A student must pass more than 50% of their courses for the year. A student must also pass 50% of their required Science concentration courses for the year, as well as 50% of general education and complementary courses taken in the year.

A student admitted in January must pass more than 50% of their courses including one Science concentration course and one general education/complementary course.

Students who register for fewer than two science courses or for fewer than two General Education courses in a semester will not be permitted to continue in the Science program without the permission of an Academic Advisor for the program.

Enriched Science and Environmental Science students should also refer to their program manual for additional advancement requirements.

Technical Programs

A student in a technical (career) program should refer to their program manual for the appropriate advancement policy.
