A pilot project between Sustainable Dawson, Office of First Year, and Peace Centre, the Sustainable Happiness will be holding its soft launch during Peace Week.
According to Dr. Catherine O’Brien and Sean O’Brien Murray
Sustainable Happiness is an approach to happiness research that builds upon work from fields such as positive psychology, mental health, and sustainability. Sustainable happiness looks at the relationship between individual well-being and the well-being of other people and the environment. This means that we are not solely looking at an individual’s happiness and well-being in isolation from how the choices they make impact other people and the natural environment.
Sustainable happiness is not a trend or a singular path, but rather an approach that emphasises conscientious decision-making, and how that affects your environment. Sustainable happiness encourages thoughtfulness and an appreciation of your role in this wonderful ecosystem of relationships between yourself, your immediate surroundings, your society, and Nature.
Created by Dr. Catherine O’Brien and Sean O’Brien Murray, this unique journal asks you 100 questions (one question per day), and is meant to be a guide to help you rediscover the interrelationship between yourself, others, and with Nature. The journal is a tool, and is carefully designed to gently encourage thought and strengthen your connection with your environment.

We are not only pleased to offer 2 Sustainable Happiness Certificates, but during Peace Week and throughout the semester, we will be hosting a series of events that relates to Sustainable Happiness and the Journal. Peace and Sustainability are part of the same ecosystem: distinct and symbiotic. You cannot have peace without sustainability, and you cannot have sustainability without peace. By protecting our resources, we are prioritising others. It is through nurturing our environment and our societies, we can better share resources and begin to remove the obstacles of injustice, thus building a more peaceful, sustainable, and just way of life.
