{"id":12,"date":"2014-04-15T18:04:19","date_gmt":"2014-04-15T18:04:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www-chris.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/physical-rehabilitation\/?page_id=12"},"modified":"2021-08-04T16:53:31","modified_gmt":"2021-08-04T20:53:31","slug":"faq","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www-chris.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/physiotherapy-technology\/faq\/","title":{"rendered":"FAQ"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The aim of the Physiotherapy Technology Program is to graduate future physiotherapy technologists who are able to intervene in cases relating to geriatric, orthopaedic, neurological and cardiopulmonary problems, acting within their scope of practice.<\/p>\n<p>Upon completion of the degree, students will have the knowledge to: understand the information contained in the client\u2019s file, collect data, develop an intervention plan (when indicated), implement the intervention plan, adapt the intervention based on the client\u2019s needs\/response (when indicated), maintain the client\u2019s file, and collaborate with other health care providers.<\/p>\n<p>Graduates of the Physiotherapy Technology Program, who attain membership within the professional Order <em>(l\u2019Ordre Professionnel de la physioth\u00e9rapie du Qu\u00e9bec)<\/em>, become licensed to work as a physiotherapy technologist within the province of Qu\u00e9bec.<\/p>\n\n        <style>\n\n        <\/style>\n\n\t\t<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"what-are-the-admission-requirements\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>What are the admission requirements?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<ul>\n<li>Diploma of Secondary Studies (DES), including: Secondary V Language of Instruction, Secondary V Second Language, Secondary IV Science, Secondary IV Mathematics , Secondary IV History<\/li>\n<li>Secondary IV Mathematics: Cultural, Social and Technical Option 563-404 (or higher eg. 406, 436, CEGEP 201-013-50)<\/li>\n<li>Secondary V Physics: 553-504 (or 534 or cegep 203-001-50<strong>*<\/strong>)<\/li>\n<li>Be eligible to take College English 603-101 and Basic French 602-100 (testing may be required)<\/li>\n<li>The submission of a 200-300 word letter of intent. Candidates <strong>must <\/strong>address all of the following queries in their letters:\n<ul>\n<li>Please indicate your reasons for applying to the Physiotherapy Technology program.<\/li>\n<li>How do your personality traits, talents and interests match the requirements of this profession?<\/li>\n<li>What characteristics would make you a successful student in a self-directed learning environment such as ours?<\/li>\n<li>What exposure or personal experience have you had with the profession? (E.g., work experience and\/or volunteerism.)<\/li>\n<li>What would your career plans be following graduation from the Physiotherapy Technology program?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Please note: <\/strong><br \/>\nWhile Chemistry is not a program prerequisite, a high school level Chemistry course or equivalent is strongly recommended to improve chances for success in the program.<\/p>\n<p>Following admission to the Physiotherapy Technology Program, all students must submit an immunization record in order to complete the clinical education component of the program which begins in year 2. Newly admitted students will receive further information regarding immunizations during the first semester of studies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>*<\/strong>It is strongly recommended that Math 201-015-50 or Math 506 or 536 be completed before registering in Physics 203-001-50.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"i-have-done-the-pre-requisites-more-than-5-years-ago-how-will-this-affect-my-application\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>I have done the pre-requisites more than 5 years ago. How will this affect my application?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>If you have completed the program pre-requisites more than 5 years ago, you will be required to demonstrate your competency in these areas by either passing pre-admission tests with a satisfactory grade or by taking refresher courses.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"i-am-missing-a-pre-requisite-can-i-take-it-during-the-summer-prior-to-admission\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>I am missing a pre-requisite. Can I take it during the summer prior to admission?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>All pre-requiste courses must have been completed, or be in progress, during the time of application to the program.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"can-i-be-admitted-in-january\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>Can I be admitted in January?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>No, students are admitted to the program only in the fall.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"i-lack-the-required-prerequisites-and-or-need-to-improve-my-language-skills-what-should-i-do\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>I lack the required prerequisites and\/or need to improve my language skills. What should I do?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>You can complete pre-requisite courses and\/or improve your language skills by registering in the appropriate courses through the Continuing Education department at any CEGEP or through an Adult Education centre.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"how-can-i-find-out-if-the-courses-i-have-taken-are-equivalent-to-the-admission-pre-requisite-courses\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>How can I find out if the courses I have taken are equivalent to the admission pre-requisite courses?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>Speak to your high school guidance counselor for advice, and definitely come to Open House (usually the third Sunday in October, check the website for specific date), Information Evening in February before the March 1 application deadline, or take a College Tour. If you are a current Dawson student, go speak to an Academic Advisor.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"i-believe-that-i-hold-an-equivalent-degree-that-has-been-obtained-in-another-country-am-i-eligible-to-practice-as-a-physiotherapy-technologist-in-the-province-of-quebec\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>I believe that I hold an equivalent degree that has been obtained in another country. Am I eligible to practice as a Physiotherapy Technologist in the province of Quebec?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>Individuals who hold a similar degree from other countries can request a professional assessment of their file through<em> l\u2019Ordre professionnel de la physioth\u00e9rapie du Qu\u00e9bec<\/em>. Can I finish in less than 3 years?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>You cannot finish in less than 3 years, but having a D.E.C. will enable you to lighten your course load. You will be given credit for the general education courses and complementary courses you have already completed, but you must follow the specific course sequence for the program in each semester.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"i-have-a-d-e-c-is-it-realistic-to-work-part-time-while-following-the-program\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>I have a D.E.C. Is it realistic to work part-time while following the program?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>Even students who already have a D.E.C. find it difficult to work more than 10 hrs per week.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"what-are-the-financing-costs-related-to-the-program\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>What are the financing costs related to the program?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>There is no tuition fee for Quebec residents, although all full-time students must pay student fees of <strong>approximately <\/strong>$130.00\/ semester. Students should also expect to budget a few hundred dollars for books each semester.<br \/>\nNon-residents should consult the Dawson website for tuition fee information.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"are-there-any-physical-aptitude-requirements-for-entry-into-the-program\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>Are there any physical aptitude requirements for entry into the program?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>Immunizations, which are recommended by the Department of Public Health for health care professionals and students, must be completed before entering the clinical environment.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"how-many-hours-per-week-should-i-be-reserving-for-home-studies\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>How many hours per week should I be reserving for home studies?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>At least as many hours as you spend at the College.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"can-i-complete-the-program-at-my-own-pace\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>Can I complete the program at my own pace?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>No, you must take all courses in each semester as per the program grid. Failing one discipline course will place you in a four year program. The College as well as the program have specific standing and advancement policies.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"what-type-of-financial-academic-support-is-available-at-the-college\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>What type of financial\/academic support is available at the College?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>Check the Dawson College website to find out about the many services available including the Mentor program, the peer and faculty tutoring , Academic Advising, the Academic Skills Centre, Counselling and Career Planning and Financial Aid.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"what-are-the-requirements-to-practice-as-a-physiotherapy-technologist\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>What are the requirements to practice as a physiotherapy technologist?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>To practice as a physiotherapy technologist, graduates of a physiotherapy technology collegial program must become members of <em>l\u2019Ordre professionnel de la physioth\u00e9rapie du Qu\u00e9bec<\/em>. To become a member but you may need to pass the French proficiency test from the <em>\u201cOffice qu\u00e9b\u00e9quoise de la langue fran\u00e7aise. <\/em>Students are <em><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">exempt <\/span><\/em>from this OQLF exam if:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>they have studied full time for at least three years at a French institution, at the secondary or post-secondary level (high school, cegep, or university) <strong>or <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>they have passed mother-tongue French exams in secondary four or five in Qu\u00e9bec <strong>or <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>they received a secondary education diploma in Qu\u00e9bec after the 1984-1985 school year<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"is-studying-in-a-physiotherapy-technology-program-the-same-as-studying-in-a-physical-therapy-program\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>Is studying in a Physiotherapy Technology program the same as studying in a physical therapy program?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>No. The Physiotherapy Technology program leads to a diploma of collegial studies and, upon enrollment into the Order, to the title of Physiotherapy Technologist. A physical therapy degree, in Canada, leads to a Masters of Science in Physical Therapy, and upon enrollment into the Order, to the title of Physical Therapist.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"is-a-physiotherapy-technologist-the-same-as-a-physical-therapist-physiotherapist\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>Is a physiotherapy technologist the same as a physical therapist (physiotherapist)?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>No. Although both are part of the same Order, each has different scopes of practice; that is, the level of responsibilities differ and not all of the professional activities performed by the physical therapist can be performed by the physiotherapy technologist. For more information, consult the <a href=\"http:\/\/oppq.qc.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">OPPQ<\/a> website.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"faq-content\"><div class=\"dc_faq\" id=\"what-are-the-job-prospects-and-what-is-the-estimated-starting-salary\"><div class=\"dc_faq-title\"><button>What are the job prospects and what is the estimated starting salary?<\/button><\/div><div class=\"dc_faq-body\">\n<p>In January of 2011, an article on the <em>Jobboom<\/em> website stated that there are currently 2,200 physiotherapy technologist in Quebec. According to the article, about half of those are employed by the public sector and the pay scale for physiotherapy technologist <strong>in the public sector<\/strong> starts at $21.19 an hour. Physiotherapy technologists are in high demand in the labor force.
