All countries are invited to participate in this worldwide celebration of mathematics on March 14 (Pi Day: 3\/14). Activities are planned for both students and the general public in schools, museums, libraries and other spaces.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dawson&#8217;s Mathematics Department is organizing activities on Thursday, March 12.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Poster and Video Contest for Prizes<br \/>\n<\/strong>\u2022 Posters or videos can address instances of mathematics from science and technology, from organization of cities, society, and government, from everyday human activities;<br \/>\n\u2022 Posters and videos must include a full reference list and and acknowledgement of any outside help. A poster or video abstract up to 250 words to explain the theoretical aspect of the<br \/>\nmathematics involved should accompany them.<br \/>\n\u2022 Posters should not draw too heavily from web sources.<br \/>\n\u2022 Each author of the poster or video must register to apanait@dawsoncollege.qc.ca before <strong>March 9, 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>More details about the contest can be found at:<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www-chris.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/mathematics\/international-day-of-mathematics-2020\/\">https:\/\/www-chris.dawsoncollege.qc.ca\/mathematics\/international-day-of-mathematics-2020\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Math Day Events:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.:\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>On Some Wonders of Mathematics &#8211; Professor Shahab Shahabi<\/strong><br \/>\nAbstract: There are many wonderful things in Math. In this rather informal talk, geared<br \/>\ntowards first year college students, we shall touch upon some of the fantastic wonders of<br \/>\nmathematics (old and new), from well-established theories to widely open conjectures!<\/p>\n<p><strong>11:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>From Archimedes to Newton: A Brief History of Calculus &#8211; Professor<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Alexander Hariton<\/strong><br \/>\nAbstract: I will give a brief overview of the history of Calculus. I will begin by describing<br \/>\nthe work of ancient Greek mathematicians, including Zeno and Archimedes. I will then<br \/>\nmention some early modern contributions, such as those by Cavalieri and Fermat, which<br \/>\nanticipated the development of Calculus. Finally, I will examine the investigations of<br \/>\nNewton and Leibnitz into infinitesimal Calculus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1:00 p.m.-2.30 p.m.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Imaginary applications &#8211; Professor Andreea Panait<\/strong><br \/>\nAbstract: Imaginary is a non-profit organization created for promoting modern<br \/>\nmathematics. They organize exhibitions in many countries with the goal of changing the<br \/>\nimage of mathematics.
