Where will I fit in? What are my career options?<\/b><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>These are big questions. Some people seem to know exactly what they want to do with their lives. They choose a college or university program and when they graduate, they go straight to the their career. The truth is that most CEGEP students aren\u2019t that certain about what their educational and\/or professional future looks like. It\u2019s fairly common to have questions like the ones above. If you want to generate some answers to these big questions, consider taking the following steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Attend a <em><strong>career drop-in<\/strong>\u00a0session\u00a0<\/em>at the <em>Career Resource Centre <\/em>(room 6D.5, 2nd floor of library).<\/li>\n<li>Visit the <em><strong>Career Resource Centre<\/strong> <\/em>to get (or find out how to get) information about various career fields<\/li>\n<li>Sign up for one of our <em><strong>career-planning workshops.\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Career Resource Centre<\/h2>\n<p><strong>If you want to meet with a career counsellor or if you want to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Research careers<\/li>\n<li>Look at university websites<\/li>\n<li>Learn about working and studying abroad<\/li>\n<li>Find out which universities offer the program(s) you are interested in<\/li>\n<li>Find out what you can do with a University degree (major) in\u2026\u2026(<em><strong>YOU<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0fill in the blank)<\/li>\n<li>Take out a book on careers for people who are interested in\u2026\u2026(<em><strong>YOU<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0fill in the blank)<\/li>\n<li>Learn about some excellent career-planning (including career video) websites\u2026..<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2026then visit the Career Resource Centre in Room 6D.5 (Library, 2nd floor). The Centre is a service where students can\u00a0<em>meet with a career counsellor,\u00a0<\/em>research educational and career planning materials and more. There is also a lending library with a collection of books on every imaginable career from accountant to zoologist.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre\u2019s hours are posted on the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/dawsoncollege.omnivox.ca\/\">MyDawson portal<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and on the door at Room 6D.5 (Library, 2nd floor).<\/p>\n<h2>Career Drop-in Sessions<\/h2>\n<p>At a drop-in session you can have a <strong><em>20-minute<\/em><\/strong> meeting with a career counsellor. <em>No appointment necessary.\u00a0<\/em>You can come to our drop-ins <em>as many times as you want. <\/em>These meetings can be very informative and will hopefully reduce your stress about the whole\u00a0<em><strong>&#8220;what do I do with the rest of my life&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>thing<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Career Planning Workshops<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Career Connections Workshop:<\/strong><\/span> This is an informative (3 or 4-session) workshop that will help you to identify your interests, values, skills, personal preferences, and help you clarify your unique career story. During the workshop you will complete <em style=\"font-size: 1.4rem;\">The Strong Interest<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem;\"> and <\/span><em style=\"font-size: 1.4rem;\">Skills Confidence Inventory<\/em><span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem;\"> as well as several other assessments. You will learn how to use the results to find career and educational options that fit your preferences and meet your goals. You will also learn about websites that can be of great help in your <em>academic\/career decision-making process.<\/em><\/span>These workshops are led by counselling professionals who will address strategies for researching careers as well as encourage interactive group discussions.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Career Cruising Workshop:<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Looking for career options? \u00a0Come <em>cruising<\/em>! \u00a0A 90-minute <b style=\"font-size: 1.4rem;\">Career Cruising Workshop<\/b><span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem;\"> will help you to:<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<ul>\n<li>identify careers based on your <strong>interests<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>see how these careers match your <strong>skills<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>learn why certain careers are a <strong>better match<\/strong> for you than others<\/li>\n<li>get in-depth <strong>information on careers<\/strong> of your choice, including job descriptions, working conditions, earnings, educational requirements, college and university programs, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Find out which universities <em>throughout Canada and the United States<\/em> offer the program(s) which could lead you into this career.<\/li>\n<li>learn about the best <strong><em>career information websites<\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Choosing A University Major Workshop:<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Get help making the next big decision in your life. This one-session workshop is offered jointly by the Counselling and Career Development and Academic Advising departments. Using the <i style=\"font-size: 1.4rem;\">Strong Interest Inventory <\/i>(interest test)<span style=\"font-size: 1.4rem;\">, this workshop is aimed at helping you to identify university programs that match your interests and preferences. You will also learn strategies that can help you with the application process.
