Along with these changes come ethical and social issues that will need to be tackled, sooner or later. According to a recent report released by the World Economic Forum on The Future of Jobs, technological breakthroughs such as high-speed mobile internet, machine learning, augmented and virtual reality, big-data analytics, and cloud technology will be spearheading companies\u2019 adoption of new technologies between 2018 and 2022.\u00a0 Furthermore,\u00a0according to the same report, \u201cin purely quantitative terms, 75 million current job roles may be displaced by the shift in the division of labour between humans, machines and algorithms, while 133 million new job roles may emerge at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The education sector is mobilizing to identify the many challenges and opportunities that the proliferation of AI presents. Dawson College is well-positioned to make substantive contributions to this enterprise and to fill an important role in the burgeoning AI ecosystem. Regardless of program of study, all of our students will graduate into a rapidly evolving economy driven by\u00a0powerful, pervasive and somewhat nebulous technologies\u00a0The pace and scale of change makes the exact future that awaits them is\u00a0difficult to predict.<\/p>\n<p>However, as a community and through a variety of approaches and a wide range of initiatives, Dawson College aims to revolutionize college education and better prepare the leaders of tomorrow. We will\u00a0not delegate this responsibility to undergraduate or graduate studies. Groundbreaking technologies offer\u00a0great rewards to those who learn to master them, but equally dire consequences to those swept along in the\u00a0tide of change without a basic understanding of the landscape. Dawson College is in a unique position to\u00a0influence how the CEGEP network ultimately decides to address this turning point in economic history.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" Initiative- version bilingue\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h3>How to get involved<\/h3>\n<p>The AI initiative at Dawson is cross-disciplinary and multi-faceted and there is a myriad of ways to get involved.\u00a0 If you are faculty, there will be regular calls for proposals for research and teaching fellowships.\u00a0 There is also a Community of Practice that meets a couple times per month that is open to all.\u00a0 For those looking to influence the direction of the initiative itself, there is an AI task force composed of members of the Dawson community, which aims to\u00a0have April 2019, the Board of Governors of Dawson College approved\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0Initiative:\u00a0\u00a0an ambitious, multi-faceted\u00a0three-year\u00a0strategic effort to\u00a0better prepare our students for a future which will be\u00a0increasingly\u00a0shaped by new technologies such as\u00a0<i>Machine L<\/i><i>earning<\/i>, the\u00a0<i>Internet of Things<\/i>, and\u00a0<i>Big Data<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The largest fraction of the\u00a0approved\u00a0financing is for the\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0multi-disciplinary\u00a0Community of Practice.<i>\u00a0<\/i>CoP<i>\u00a0<\/i>Fellows\u00a0are faculty who meet regularly and collaborate on\u00a0developing portfolios of\u00a0teaching resources\u00a0in their discipline, which are focused on incorporating themes pertinent to the\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0initiative\u00a0in\u00a0their\u00a0classrooms.<\/p>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright wp-image-488\" important part of the budget is focused on supporting the development of\u00a0applied research\u00a0expertise amongst faculty with respect to these same themes. The\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0Research Fellowship is meant to support\u00a0faculty in research projects related to\u00a0domains such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fundamental or Applied research in AI<\/li>\n<li>Machine Learning<\/li>\n<li>Ethics of AI<\/li>\n<li>Computational Linguistics or Natural Language Processing<\/li>\n<li>Digital Humanities<\/li>\n<li>Computational Social Science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote><p><strong>THE CALL FOR FELLOWS IS NOW CLOSED.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The ultimate objective of the\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0initiative is to expose as many students as possible, in as many ways as possible, to\u00a0how\u00a0data is\u00a0transforming every facet of\u00a0our lives at an unprecedented pace. The impact of social media platforms on democracy, algorithmic biases, digital surveillance,\u00a0AI and the Arts, the economics of automation,\u00a0computer vision, machine translation, augmented reality, learning analytics, biostatistics\u2026these are but a few\u00a0of the\u00a0new frontiers\u00a0where\u00a0Dawson faculty\u00a0may have research expertise.\u00a0Students will invariably benefit from such\u00a0a focused effort to systematically accelerate these\u00a0types\u00a0of research\u00a0projects.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0DawsonAI\u00a0initiative stands out from other similar projects at other institutions, because\u00a0of its focus on building the local capacity of our faculty so that the impact spreads beyond the traditional math, science, and computer science, disciplines.
